A delegation from Punjab, India lead by Director Prof S.K. Das and Dean Dr. Harpreet Singh of the Indian Institute of Technology-Ropar (IITR) were in Chicago on Oct 7, 2017 where they met with Commissioner Frank Avila to learn about the MWRD and share water resource knowledge. The delegation of professors are visiting the US, Canada and Europe to network with water professionals and to collaborate on research with leading technical institutions and private and public agencies. Punjab, India, where IITR is located, is confronting a severe water crisis with water shortages and drastically falling groundwater table.
Commissioner Avila discussed the operations and maintenance of the MWRD’s seven water reclamation plants and various projects such as energy and resource recovery the MWRD is currently engaged in to protect the water environment of the Chicago area. The IITR is a relatively new institute, but has made its mark by being ranked 21st position in technical institutions in India. This recognition is the result of the dynamic and dedicated leadership of Director Prof Das, who emphasizes quality rather than quantity in research.
The IITR is interested in collaborating and learning more from the MWRD
to improve the water quality in Punjab and the
lives of the people who live there.
